7/7/15 MC DONALD SYSTEM WATER SUPPLY UPDATE

We are switching the water from the Fredericks to the Upper West Canal on Tuesday morning July 7th. The water supply is limited going to the Upper West and we do not think it will hold out for the entire week, therefore it is likely that the Upper West will have to be shut off sometime this week.

We will keep the website updated daily to keep you informed of the status.

7/7/2015 MOSS REMOVAL ON THE EAST MAIN CANAL

The District will be removing moss on the East Main Canal on Tuesday, July 7th above the Port of Entry going upstream. The moss removal operation will continue throughout the week.

7/7/2015 MOSS REMOVAL ON THE TALENT MAIN CANAL

The District will be removing moss on the Talent Main Canal on Tuesday, July 7th at Dark Hollow Road going upstream. The moss removal operation will continue throughout the week.

7/7/2015 MOSS REMOVAL ON THE WEST MAIN CANAL

The District will be removing moss on the West Main Canal on Tuesday, July 7th at Mel Lowe Lane going upstream. The moss removal operation will continue throughout the week.

WATER SUPPLY UPDATE JUNE 29, 2015

The hot weather persists. This was one scenario that we were concerned about when we entered into this very short water year. As we pointed out earlier in the season, wet cool weather could extend the season for us, but extended periods of 99- 100 degrees and above will most certainly shorten our season.

The hot weather escalates everything for us including increased use on the canals which causes shortages at times, but more importantly evaporative losses increase in the canals and in the reservoirs which lose more water yet over the increased surface area.

Moss (aquatic weed growth) increases with increased water temperatures that cause canals to back up, which has the potential to increase seepage in the more porous areas of the canal system. As always, patience is a must during moss removal operations. The District has 3 excavators working to try to catch up with the accelerated moss growth. As you know, (even without the elevated air temperatures) this operation alone can cause interruptions to the water supply in the canals, however it is a necessary evil if we want to keep the canal system in operation. To date we have been running relatively close to last year’s use on the canals, which got us well into September, however the hot weather and increased demand may impact the season.
